"...Rental options for artists — especially young and just-starting-out artists — are equally crucial as ownership opportunities. At 52 O St. NW, a large historic brick warehouse houses a gaggle of creative types, from poets and DJs to painters, printmakers and video artists, who share rental units that often double as live-work spaces.

"After you leave art school, it's hard to find that critique or that support to talk about and discuss your work, share ideas and talk about the creative process," says Lisa Marie Thalhammer, a 28-year-old painter who has lived and created in an O Street apartment for the past five years.

A live-work space cultivates a commute-free lifestyle that's convenient but, more significantly, crucial to an integrated approach to art. "When inspiration hits you at any time of the day, you can approach your work — it doesn't have to be so scheduled," Thalhammer says. "Living and working in the same space always allows for that spontaneity."

See DC Artists in Their Natural Habitats

When: Saturday, 4/24 and Sunday, 4/25, 11 AM - 5 PM
Where: 52 O Street Studio, 52 O St NW, Washington DC
Who: Over a dozen artists opening their doors to the public. Free.

Washington DC - The 52 O Street Studio will be hosting its annual Open Studios event at the end of April to throw open the doors and let the public in to see one of the most active groups of artists in Washington, DC. 52 O Street Studios boasts over 20 artists in one building, working in a wide range of media and styles. The free event provides the visitor the opportunity to purchase artwork and meet the artists in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere.

Artists participating in the open studio include Ben Tolman, whose portrait of his wife is being shown at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Lisa Marie Thalhammer, the artist behind the Boxer Girl mural in the Bloomington neighborhood of DC, and Matt Hollis, an artist whose abstract organic sculpture, paintings, and sketches show at many galleries. The other artists showing their works are Raye Leith, Christopher Dolan, Zach Vaughn, Ari Goldstein, DJ Natty Boom, Andrea Mayer, Rob Emrich, The Tuesday Night Group, Micheline Klagsbrun, Lisa K. Rosenstein, Dean Hutchinson, Kendall Nordin, Danielle Evennou, Rebecca Kallem, Ty Brickhouse, Malte Renz, Thom Flynn, Andy Holtin, Peter E. Harper, Devona Cole, Brie Husted, David Long, and Department of Furniture.

"Our work at 52 O Street Studios tempts the edges of the everyday and spills out into the community," says Micheline Klagsbrun, a long-time member and the coordinator the regular Tuesday night figure painting group that has been meeting at 52 O Street Studios for 25 years.
